By Bob Herman IT Tropolis FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA – I  have endless stories of companies thinking their backup is running, only to find out they cannot actually recover data after a real incident occurs.  That’s when I get the call!

Regardless of the backup platform, it’s imperative to test-drive your restore process.  Test drive simple file backup systems by randomly selecting a few files to recover.  Your backup system should have a feature that allows you to recover the files to a different location so as not to overwrite your live production files.  Test drive more sophisticated imaging backup systems by restoring the backed up workstation or server as a virtual machine to the backup device itself, or to other hardware that supports virtualization.  In short, be sure to test drive your restore process and you’ll have peace of mind in the event of a true failure.
